Application of MAGNAFLOC 351 SS
MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is a high-performance anionic polyacrylamide flocculant supplied in solid (SS) form and designed for efficient solid–liquid separation in a wide range of industrial, municipal, and mineral processing applications. As a high-molecular-weight anionic polymer, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS functions primarily through a polymer-bridging mechanism. Long polymer chains adsorb onto the surface of fine suspended particles and link them together to form large, dense, and fast-settling flocs. Because of its strong flocculation capability, good solubility, and stable performance under variable operating conditions, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is widely used in demanding clarification, thickening, and dewatering processes.
Mining and Mineral Processing
One of the most important applications of MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is in mining and mineral processing, particularly in tailings thickening, concentrate clarification, and process water recovery. Ore grinding, flotation, and leaching operations generate large volumes of fine mineral particles that remain suspended due to their small size and surface charge. Natural settling is often too slow to meet production and water recovery requirements.
MAGNAFLOC 351 SS anionic polyacrylamide effectively bridges these fine mineral particles, forming strong flocs that settle rapidly in thickeners and clarifiers. Its use significantly improves settling rates and increases underflow solids concentration. At the same time, it produces clear overflow water with low turbidity, which can be recycled back into the processing plant. This reduces freshwater consumption, lowers operating costs, and supports sustainable mining operations. Higher underflow density also improves tailings transport, stacking, and storage efficiency.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is widely applied in industrial wastewater treatment across industries such as metallurgy, steel production, power generation, chemical manufacturing, mining-related industries, ceramics, and construction materials. These wastewaters often contain high concentrations of suspended solids, metal hydroxides, and fine inorganic particles formed during neutralization and chemical precipitation.
When used after inorganic coagulants such as ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate, polyaluminum chloride, or lime, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS acts as an effective flocculant aid. It strengthens floc structure, accelerates sedimentation, and improves overall clarification efficiency. The treated effluent shows lower suspended solids and turbidity, helping facilities meet environmental discharge standards. Improved solid removal also reduces the load on downstream filtration or biological treatment units, enhancing system stability and efficiency.
Sludge Thickening and Dewatering
Another key application of MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is in sludge thickening and mechanical dewatering. Sludge generated from industrial and municipal treatment processes often contains fine particles with high water retention, making dewatering difficult and costly. MAGNAFLOC 351 SS anionic polyacrylamide forms large, porous, and shear-resistant flocs that release water more easily.
In gravity thickeners, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS increases settling speed and produces higher underflow solids concentration. When applied before belt filter presses, centrifuges, or screw presses, it improves cake dryness, reduces polymer consumption, and stabilizes dewatering performance. Reduced sludge volume directly lowers transportation, handling, and disposal costs, making sludge management more economical.
Municipal Water and Wastewater Treatment
In municipal water treatment plants, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is commonly used as a coagulant aid to enhance flocculation after primary coagulation with alum or iron salts. The addition of this anionic flocculant increases floc size and density, resulting in faster settling and improved clarifier performance. Lower residual turbidity improves downstream filtration efficiency and extends filter run times.
In municipal wastewater treatment, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS is mainly applied for primary sludge and chemically conditioned sludge thickening. Its stable performance under fluctuating flow rates and solids loading makes it suitable for large-scale wastewater treatment facilities that require consistent and reliable operation.
Pulp and Paper Industry
MAGNAFLOC 351 SS also finds important application in the pulp and paper industry, particularly for white water clarification, fiber and filler recovery, and paper mill sludge dewatering. Fine fibers and mineral fillers suspended in white water can be efficiently flocculated using MAGNAFLOC 351 SS, allowing valuable raw materials to be recovered and reused in the papermaking process.
Improved white water clarity supports higher levels of internal water recycling, reducing freshwater intake and effluent discharge. For paper mill sludge, MAGNAFLOC 351 SS enhances drainage and increases solids content in the dewatered cake, helping mills reduce disposal costs and improve overall production efficiency.
